Cllr Joe Ashton

South Ward elected 2019

I was born and raised in Baildon and attended local schools. The wellbeing of the area is very important to me but my route to becoming a town councillor was not particularly planned. I was originally co-opted to Baildon Parish Council (as the Town Council was then known) in October 2008, to fill a "casual vacancy" and have served continuously since.

Prior to 2008 I helped to establish the parish council, as a member of Baildon Community Council from January 2002. This was a role I originally took on to represent younger people. Over this time I also held various other voluntary positions, including Baildon Futures Partnership, Shipley Area Partners' Advisory Group and an Associate Governor at Salt Grammar School (now Titus Salt School). I established and served on both Baildon in Bloom and the Ferniehurst Dell Improvement Partnership.

Between 2006 and 2010 I studied at the University of Sheffield, following which I worked for local government in Merseyside and North Yorkshire. Outside of politics, my interests include horticulture, reading, rambling and theatre. I have appeared in several local productions, including with Baildon Players.

I served as Vice Chair of the Council Council in 2010/11 and again in 2013/14 and 2014/15. I served as Chair of the Council in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2015/16. I have also served as a member or the chair of most of the Council's committees and have previously represented the Council at district and regional level. Currently I am a member of the Environment and Planning committees.
